Dette mesterstykke af en Saint Èmilion Grand Cru fra Maltus, kan i sin tilblivelse og smag beskrives med ét ord: Præcision. Alt er gjort med fuldt overlæg, og enhver detalje er vigtig. Stokkene til denne enkeltmarksvin (kun 1,2 hektar) er cirka 100 år gamle, og er plantet ned i den hårdeste form af kalksten (calcaire á astéries). Gennem sæsonen fraklippes størstedelen af druerne, så kun de mest modne, smagfulde er tilbage ved høsten. Druerne håndplukkes, kold-macereres og gennemgår malolaktisk fermentering på nye franske egetræsfade. I sine unge år er vinen udpræget mineralsk i sit udtryk, hvilket med alderen skifter mod dybde og kraft. Maltus siger selv, ganske kort, om vinen: ’Denne vin er ulig enhver anden vi laver’.

Jonathan Maltus er englænder, oprindeligt født i Afrika og kendt som klassens enfant terrible.
Han har altid været håndhæver for, at en vin skal bedømmes ud fra smag, ikke etikette.
Dette skulle vise sig endnu mere, da kom til Saint-Emilion, og var med til at ændre opfattelsen af traditionel Bordeaux med “garageperioden” i midt 90’erne, hvor en gruppe vinmagere “les garagistes” nyfortolkede opfattelsen af områdets vine.
Disse “garagevine” indebærer topvine fra små enkeltmarker og kendetegnes ved et rundere, federe og fyldigere udtryk end den traditionelle Bordeaux med langt højere tanniner, som skal gemmes i mange år før drikkeklar.
Maltus’ filosofi har altid været “gør tingene anderledes og bedre”. Har han derfor med sin enestående filosofi og drivkraft skabt sit eget Chateau Teyssier, som i dag byder på perler af topvine og med særlig nichestatus. Siden Jonathan overtog slottet har han udvidet med flere hektar og benytter sig kun af det bedste produktionsudstyr. Husets vine måler sig i dag med nogle af de største Bordeaux’er med flotte anmeldelser i den internationale vinpresse og har flere gange vundet internationale blindsmagninger i det fine selskab. Hertil må Jonathan Maltus tilskrives rollen som ‘yndling’ efter vinanmelder Robert Parkers anmeldelser og points.
Dette kunne blandt andet ses, da supercuvéen Le Dôme fik de magiske 100 Parker points i 2010-årgangen og 99 i både 2009 og 2016!
I dag har han udvidet sit enestående virke til Napa Valley i Californien, som med samme filosofi og håndværk skaber enkeltmarksvine i kultgenren, kaldet World’s End.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Les Asteries wafts seductively out of the glass with fragrant notes of Ceylon tea, potpourri, forest floor and lavender over a core of Morello cherries, wild blueberries and blackberry tart with a touch of bouquet garni. Medium-bodied, refreshing and delicately crafted, the palate has wonderfully ripe, silt-like tannins and seamless freshness supporting the perfumed fruit, finishing on a lingering mineral note. Les Asteries is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker, and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. The vineyard is composed of thin clay over limestone.
95 points VinousA powerful, explosive wine, the 2019 Les Astéries offers up a compelling interplay og dense, plush fruit intermingled with chalky, mineral notes that act as a counterpoint. Chocolate, spice and savory accents add further layers of complexity. The 2019 has come along splendidly since I tasted it as a barel sample. It's breadth, energy and vibrancy simply canb't be denied.
